Veterans Week Recordings

Home

Description

In partnership with StoryCorps, 12 public library staff have been trained to record and archive stories. In November of 2022, we gathered Veterans stories the week leading up to Veterans Day by partnering with three area local public libraries. We used the following promotional text: “As a veteran, your service and your story matters. Bridges Library System wants to give you the opportunity to share and preserve your stories for future generations. Veterans are invited to record a conversation with a loved one for a new oral history project at local libraries in partnership with StoryCorps. We’ll be offering private recording opportunities at the Menomonee Falls Library on November 7, the Pauline Haass Library in Sussex on November 9 and 10, and the Brookfield Library on November 11. To learn more and register, visit bridgeslibrarysystem.org/StoryCorps.”

Cost

The cost of the equipment and training of the facilitators was covered by a grant.

Timing

We are offering this recording opportunity the week leading up to Veterans Day but could be offered anytime of year.

Suggested Duration

One week, offering mornings, afternoons, and evenings to accommodate varying schedules.

Resources needed

  • recording equipment
  • lists of questions for people to consider using
  • a quiet space for recording

Tips for Success

A lot of promotion! We have been recording people's stories (not just veterans) for a year now and it takes a lot of promotion and usually a personal ask.

Assessment Ideas

We ask participants when they are done recording if they have a greater sense of connection with their recording partner.
