Description

March is National Nutrition Month creating a program where the library patrons can learn about making healthy food choices! One can do one or more of the following: 

  • Book display: a display of books regarding nutrition in the different departments for the month of March or a table to display the books during a program. 
  • Handout display: a display of handouts regarding nutrition in the different departments for the month of March or a table to display the handouts during a program. 
  • Guest speaker: a health care professional from your local hospital to talk about nutrition. 

Audience

Active military, cadets, children, community, family, spouses, and veterans.

Cost

Collection development 

  • Books - $0 - $450 (for each department depending on current holdings in adult, youth services, or reference), or general collection. Recommended books are listed in the Additional Resources/Bibliography section) 

Presenter (a health care professional from your local hospital to talk about nutrition.)

  • $0 – 550 (it may vary depending on the presenter. It can be based upon time, number of attendees, supplies used, travel, and etc) 

Timing 

National Nutrition Month in March

Suggested Duration

Book display (recommended books are listed in the Additional Resources/Bibliography section)

  • It should take an hour to set up and the book display should be displayed for the whole month of March. 

Collection development 

  • A few days to assess current collection and purchase new items. 

Handout display 

  • It should take an hour to set up and the display of handouts should be displayed for the whole month of June. 

Guest speaker (a health care professional from your local hospital to talk about nutrition)

  • 45 to 60 minutes

Tips for Success

Plan 4 months prior to the date and finalize the event 3 months prior to the date.

Assessment Ideas

  1. Attendees – the number of people attending the program or viewing the exhibit in comparison to other similar programs held in that month. 
  2. Circulation – the books on display being checked out. 
  3. Survey – asking the patrons various questions regarding the program
