Benefits for Veterans, Dependents, and Survivors

Description

A program that libraries can conduct to provide an  overview of the benefits available to veterans. For instance, benefits for health care, disability, pension, life insurance, education, employment, career, home assistance, and etc. The following two options:

  • Display: creating a display in the adult department displaying the various handouts about the benefits for Veterans, dependents, and survivors. Also, set up a table to display handouts during the guest speaker’s presentation. Recommended handouts are listed in the Additional Resources/Bibliography section.
  • Guest speaker: a representative from the Veterans Benefits Administration to present about the various benefits that are available to veterans, dependents, and survivors. Contact your local Veterans Health Administration to find a representative that will be willing to present.

Audience

Active military, cadets, children, community, family, spouses, and veterans

Cost

Presenter: there shouldn’t be a fee, but things may vary depending on the location. Contact your local Veterans Health Administration to find a representative that will be willing to present and to discuss the cost.

Timing 

Warrior Care Month in November.

Suggested Duration

Handout display - should take an hour to set up and display of handouts should be displayed for the whole month of November. Recommended handouts are listed in the Additional Resources/Bibliography section.

Guest Speaker (Veterans Benefit Administration) - 45 to 60 minutes. Contact your local Veterans Health Administration to find a representative that will be willing to present.

  • Area to display handouts 
  • Handouts regarding various benefits 

Program set-up (guest speaker) 

  • Available room 
  • Chairs (theatre style) 
  • Refreshments (optional) 
  • Computer (depends on if the presenter is presenting virtually) 
  • Projector 
  • Cord needed to connect the computer to projector input on the wall or directly to the projector 
  • Microphone  

Flyers 

  • Graphic designing program  

Marketing 

  • Social Media 
  • Flyers 
  • Newspaper article 
  • Email blast to patrons  

Tips for Success

Plan 4 months prior to the date and finalize event 3 months prior to the date.

Assessment Ideas

  1. Attendees – the number of people attending the program or viewing the exhibit in comparison to other similar programs held in that month.
  2. Survey – asking the patrons various questions regarding the program
